The Power of Creativity and Collaboration: Shirley Cornu’s Formula for Success

Shirley Cornu’s career at Bolton Adhesives is a story of dedication, passion, and relentless pursuit of innovation. From starting in the Quality Assurance department to becoming the Senior Product Development Manager, her journey reflects a commitment to personal growth and a deep love for creating new possibilities. With nearly two decades at Bolton, Shirley’s path has been shaped by her creativity, the support of her colleagues, and the company’s fostering of a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.

From Quality Assurance to Creative Leader: How did your journey at Bolton begin?

Shirley joined Bolton Adhesives in 2005, with a strong background in quality assurance. But even from the start, there was a fire within her to learn more, do more, and grow. “When I first started in the QA department, I knew I was good at what I did, but I wanted to take on new challenges,” Shirley recalls. “I felt that I could do and learn even more, so I decided to study chemistry while working. It wasn’t easy juggling both, but I was determined to grow.” With the company’s support, Shirley not only completed her evening studies but transitioned to the Research and Development department, where she began to put her new skills to the test.

Taking Risks and Reaching New Heights: What was your breakthrough moment at Bolton?

Shirley’s defining career moment came with the creation of Wood Max, a patented alternative to Polyurethane Wood Adhesives. But the road to success was far from easy. “The Wood Max project took over five years to develop,” Shirley explains. “We were working with new polymer technology, and we knew it would be a tough road. There were moments when we thought we were close to a breakthrough, only to face setbacks. But with each setback, we learned something new.  When we finally succeeded, it was so rewarding.” Wood Max didn’t just meet the new legislation—it changed the game, and it was this innovation that solidified Shirley’s place as a leader in her field.

Creativity and Collaboration: What fuels your passion for innovation at Bolton?

Shirley’s creative drive is what keeps her energized in her role as Senior Product Development Manager. “I’ve always loved solving complex problems,” she shares. “Every situation is an opportunity to grow, and every challenge presents a new possibility. It’s not just about finding a solution—it’s about finding a better solution.” Bolton’s culture of fostering creativity and offering the freedom to explore new ideas has been a key factor in Shirley’s success. “Bolton really gives me the space to think outside the box. There’s trust from the leadership, and that trust allows us to take risks and innovate. It’s an environment where I feel empowered to create something new.”

The Power of Teamwork: How has collaboration shaped your career at Bolton?

Collaboration has always been at the heart of Shirley’s work. “I’ve learned so much from my colleagues, both inside and outside of Bolton,” she reflects. “Working with diverse teams has helped me build my communication and project management skills, and the relationships I’ve built with external stakeholders have been crucial for success. You don’t succeed in product development alone—you succeed because of the people around you.” It’s clear that Shirley sees teamwork as not just a part of her job, but a key ingredient to her success.
